Alterable and NiftyImages do the same job: you paste one image URL into an email platform, and the image is drawn again every time the email is opened. Both have countdown timers, personalized images, polls, scratchers, slideshows, charts and calendars. The difference is which plan each feature sits on and what it costs to get there.

Alterable

Alterable has nine services, and eight of them work on the free plan: 5,000 impressions a month, no card, no time limit. Local maps need Pro. Rules are on every plan, with one rule-based version per image on Free and unlimited versions from Starter at $19 a month. Plans go up to Scale at $299 a month for 500,000 impressions. Our Alterable review goes through each service and its limits.

NiftyImages

NiftyImages makes personalized images, countdown timers, polls, social signals, charts and calendars for email. It works with Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Salesforce, Braze, Iterable and ActiveCampaign, and with any platform that accepts an image URL. It has four tiers. Starter is $59 a month for 25,000 opens, Growth is $149, Scale is $239, and Enterprise is priced on request. Annual billing saves 20%, according to its pricing page.

Where Alterable is better

  • A real free plan. Alterable gives you 5,000 impressions a month to send from. NiftyImages gives free images for testing, but no published allowance.
  • Polls, scratchers, slideshows, charts and calendars are on every Alterable plan. On NiftyImages, polls and scratchers start at Growth, $149 a month.
  • Rules are on every plan. NiftyImages puts rule sets, A/B tests and critical messages on Scale, $239 a month. On Alterable, A/B tests start at Pro, $79, and you switch on critical messages from Pro as well.
  • Local maps start at $79 on Pro. On NiftyImages, geo-targeted maps are Enterprise-only.
  • The REST API and MCP server come with the $19 Starter plan. NiftyImages lists its developer API and MCP under Enterprise.
  • A lower price at the same volume. 25,000 impressions a month is $24 on Alterable, against $59 for NiftyImages Starter at 25,000 opens. The units aren't identical: Alterable counts every service in an email as its own impression, so a template with three blocks uses three impressions per open. Count your own template before you compare.

Where NiftyImages is better

  • External web APIs. NiftyImages can call your own endpoint when the image is drawn, so the image can show live data from your system. It's an Enterprise feature, and Alterable has no equivalent. In Alterable, data goes in by push through the API, the MCP server or Zapier.
  • Image-in-image compositing. Alterable doesn't do it, and NiftyImages is the tool to check if your design needs one image placed inside another.
  • Free trial of the paid tiers. NiftyImages lets you try Starter through Scale with free images and no card. Alterable's free plan has no Starter features, so evergreen timers, unlimited rules and the API can't be tried without paying.
  • Enterprise extras. NiftyImages lists a shared campaign library, individual logins with roles and connected business data on its Enterprise tier, with custom pricing.

A worked example

Take a store that sends 25,000 emails a month, each with one countdown timer, and every reader opens once. That's 25,000 impressions on Alterable, which comes to $24 on Starter: $19 for the first 20,000 plus $1 for each extra 1,000. On NiftyImages it's 25,000 opens, and Starter costs $59.

Now add a poll and a product block to the same email. On Alterable that's three impressions per open, or 75,000 in total. That costs $74 on Starter ($19 plus $55 for the extra 55,000), and Pro at $79 includes 100,000. On NiftyImages the poll needs Growth at $149 a month, for the same 25,000 opens. Alterable is still cheaper in this case, but the way it counts grows with every block you add, so it's worth counting the services in your own template before you decide.

Which one should you pick?

If your list of needs is timers, personalized images, product blocks, polls, scratchers and maps, Alterable is the cheaper way to get them. On NiftyImages that list is spread over three tiers and ends at Enterprise for maps. On Alterable it's the free plan, plus Pro for maps. If you're a single marketer or an agency with several clients, you can start on Free and pay $19 once you need evergreen timers or the API.

Pick NiftyImages if you need image-in-image, or live data pulled from your own API at the moment of opening, and you have an Enterprise budget. Pick it too if you'd rather have a trial of the higher tiers before paying.
